Education minister thanks "Fiji Day" participants

08/10/2010

The Minister for Education, Mr Filipe Bole, today extended his heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation to all students, youth, teachers and heads of school that took part in yesterday’s Fiji Day celebrations.

Despite the shivering cold winds and heavy downpour, students and teachers from the greater Suva area were not easily swayed as they took part in mekes, oratories, poetry recitations, sign languages, soothing choral pieces, and even solo performances.

Given the short time span, the performances were a class of their own. Such performances were a reflection of the teachers and their hardwork in painstakingly preparing students for any event, whether it is for national celebrations or school-based functions.

It goes to show that our schools in Fiji will rise to the challenge despite the nature of the circumstances they face. Fiji has just celebrated “World Teachers’ Day” on Tuesday and the manner in which they prepared and organised their students on the day, definitely needed to be commended.

In Tavua, the Ba/Tavua Education Office joined other government department officials in a march in Tavua and they all congregated at Tavua College, which hosted the celebration.

The Minister hopes that the spirit of unity in celebrating our Fiji, as witnessed yesterday, should continue to  be nurtured and emphasised in our schools and our communities.

Filipe Bole
Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports, Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment.
